Passage

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

Assignment

People love to talk about the importance of individuality, but much of our society is designed to reward conformity. Students have to follow the rules to get good grades in school, most people have to follow rules in order to succeed in their careers, and citizens have to follow laws to avoid chaos. Then again, the people who change the world are often individuals, as represented in the quote above. Is it more important to be an individual or to be part of a group?

Plan and write a multi-paragraph essay (300–600 words) in which you develop your point of view on the above question. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
